Yoga Philosophy is a method of practicing self-control by restraining the mental activities from kleśas (afflictions). Then we can abide in the form of our choosing. Otherwise, we will identify with the mental activities (asmitā) and be controlled by them. The Yogasūtra offers many methods for restraining mental activities from afflictions. For mature practitioners: the continuous practice of samādhi (abhyāsa) & renouncing all afflictions (vairāgya). For intermediate practitioners: the uninterrupted practice (Kriyāyoga) of scorching afflictions (tapas), self-governance (svādhyāya) & devotion to Sovereignty (īśvara praṇidhāna). For beginners: the 8-Limb method (Aṣṭāṅga Yoga.) In this course you will learn about the origins of Yoga in the Kaṭhopaniṣad, the Bhagavadgītā, the Yogācārabhūmiśāstra, and the Yogasūtra. You will also learn how you can apply these insights in practical daily living and in teaching Yoga classes.

This weekend we will begin with an overview of bio-mechanics in relation to yoga. We will cover how biomechanics and energetics are connected as well as how to take care of yourself and the student while working together. We will discuss why therapeutics can be successful in a yoga classroom as compared to a gym or a place that you might have more access to props, such as a physical therapy setting. This weekend will be loaded with lots of tricks to help you understand things like knee alignment, hip pain, low back pain, shoulder injury, how to align the head and neck just to name a few. Most importantly we will learn what is the most important thing about Yoga Therapeutics.
Joe Taft believes in the transformational power of yoga. Joe (E-RYT500) is a Certified Yoga Therapist who has dedicated himself to the practice of yoga since 1997 and has been teaching since 2001.

“Advanced Asana” doesn’t mean hollowback handstands, it means having function, freedom, and awareness in the ways we move. An advanced practice isn’t about aesthetics, it’s about cultivating deeper purpose and intention in our postures and transitions. Even child’s pose can be advanced!
A downward facing dog can hold all of our unconscious habits, or it can hold the archetypal potential of our truest self. Should you do a pose based on how you feel or based on alignment? How much should you bend your knees in a forward bend? What should I do with my back leg in a lunge? Should I tuck my toes in camel pose? We’ll explore all of this and so much more.
We’ll look at the bigger picture. Backbends open the frame for the lungs, forward bends help flush the kidneys, props offer scaffolding, adjustments offer new perspective, and breath invites the imagination. Yoga Asana isn’t just movement; it’s the embodiment of theory through practice. Our time on the mat is a metaphor for rest of our lives. An advanced practice transforms unconsciousness into consciousness, which changes everything.
Expect interesting dialogue, intentional practices, real-time feedback, effective adjustments, creative use of props, and time for Q&A. You’ll refine your practice, discover new approaches to familiar poses, and find joy through communal practice. We’ll break down alignment, transitions, techniques, and the reasons why we do what we do.
