Autumn is here — and she doesn’t tiptoe in quietly.
She arrives with the buzz of Harvest Markets, Fall Festivals, and Football. Mix in all the Live Music & Food Trucks… It’s a joyful kind of busy — but whew… it’s busy!
And that’s not even counting the rest of life —
work meetings that fill our calendars,
kids’ after-school activities that keep the afternoons spinning,
emails that never seem to stop multiplying.
Some days it feels like the season itself is sweeping us along in its golden whirlwind.
So how do we do it all and still have time to breathe?
Balance, of course.
Not the wobbly-on-one-foot kind (though that’s good practice too).
The kind that comes from within — the dance between doing and being, effort and ease.
In yoga, we call this Sthira Sukha — steady and comfortable.
Picture Warrior II: feet rooted, legs strong with solid foundation.
Arms reaching wide with energy and purpose.
And yet… the shoulders soften, the jaw unclenches, the breath flows smooth.
Effort and ease, strength and softness, perfectly entwined.
It’s the same kind of balance we crave off the mat.
Maybe this fall, instead of trying to do it all,
you choose a few things that light you up —
the pumpkin patch with the family,
the Harvest Market with the live band,
the Halloween Party with the friend who always makes you laugh.
Say yes to what feels nourishing,
and give yourself permission to skip the rest.
If you love a good plan (and your color-coded calendar),
make sure you pencil in moments of me-time.
A sunrise cup of tea on the porch,
an early morning walk at Paris Mountain or along the Swamp Rabbit Trail,
and of course, your favorite yoga class that always resets your system.
Finding balance might be
allowing your schedule to breathe
with space in the to-do lists,
and sometimes letting go of all the logistics.
It’s a rhythm in the rush, softness in the swirl,
peace in the pockets between plans.
Because balance isn’t about perfection.
It’s about presence.
It’s the art of showing up — strong and soft,
awake and at ease,
living this season fully,
one grounded, grateful breath at a time.
Here are a couple simple ways to weave effort and ease into the rhythm of your days - starting now.
1. Schedule White Space: When you plan your week, literally block out an hour as “unavailable” — no chores, no screens. Protect it like an appointment with yourself.
2. Effort + Ease Checklist: For every “to-do” on your list, add a “to-renew” — for every social plan, schedule something restful.
Abbey began her exploration of yoga in 2005, as a high school teacher in Asheville. She needed something to help her unwind and decompress. After the first class she took, she was so inspired, she told her friend, "I just want to do this all the time. Imagine how amazing that would be to teach yoga, to just make people happy."
